May 24, 2004Damn the ManArriving home Friday night my mother informs me that I chose a bad weekend, Yale's graduating. Not only is Yale graduating, but one of the graduates is Barbara Bush - Dubya is expected to fly into town at some point. It turns out that he wasn't attending graduation, but having a quiet dinner with Barbara and Laura. The topper, he flies into the airport that has a runway at the end of my parents street. Friday night was a pretty chill night, Kris and I just hung around the house drinking some beers that we bought at the corner package store. Saturday, I went with my sister and mother for a manicure and pedicure and ofcourse my mother schedule's me with the guy. I don't understand why my mother can't realize that I'm sexist when it comes to someone touching my body. If it's a guy other than Kris, it's not going to happen, I don't care if he is a professional. In the place was the mother of one of my grammar school classmates, the daughter is married and recently just had a baby girl. But other than that, she didn't tell me much of what's going on in her life, what she does - work, school, etc. She didn't even ask me what's going on in my life to report back to the daughter. I'm very bitter when it comes grammar school classmates - they all thought that I was a total loser and mocked me severely. After the mani/pedicure, we brought Kris to Pepe's Pizza on Wooster street for lunch; home of the first American pizza pie (the restaurant opened in 1925, but he made the pizza in 1900). If there's a celebrity in town, most likely they'll be hitting up the place - the waitress told us Bill Murray was there Thursday night after some sports function (I want to say golf). Living in the capital region certainly is hard on a girl like me that grew up with the best pizza and eggplant parmasean. No restaurant has impressed me enough to have me return and tout as having the best pizza in the capital district. I'm still searching, I think The Fountain is next. Kris, my sister, and I wandered around Wooster Square for a while, taking pictures. It was the first time that I actually got to wander around the area, considering my sister's been living there for almost two years now and I lived in the area for 18 years. About a decade ago, one of the trees in the park had an image of Jesus (known then as the Jesus tree) and many religious people would hold vigils and pray before the tree. I don't think the image is there any longer, we tried searching for it. Next stop was the Grove street cemetary, one of the oldest cemetaries in New England. Buried there are Noah Webster, Eli Whitney, and Charles Goodyear. Unfortunately thanks to Dubya, it was closed because it was staging ground for his visit. Then onto Skull and Bones. We walked over through one of the courts of Yale, saw Beinecke Library (Rare Books), Sterling Library, Harkness Tower (the Bell Tower), and Skull and Bones. I don't recall how many times I passed this building without realizing what it was, it was just a building that seemed to cloak itself into the surrounding buildings. Then there was the High Street Arch that was magnificently decorated with naked angel chicks, and scary animal heads on the other side. We stopped on the green so I could hit a cache but wandered around the area for 45 minutes without finding it, Kris checked all the trees, my sister did too, and then I did. It was quite disappointing to bring my sister for her first cache to this unsuccessful one. I found out on Sunday that it had been made temporarily inavailable the day after I printed it out. At least I knew I wasn't going insane. Then we finished off the trip at Libby's Italian pastries back on Wooster street. They have the best Italian ices, when I was younger and worked at my parish's carnival every summer, I always requested the job of italian ice stand. That would rake in the dough and occassional tips. My sister had coconut which tasted like cotton candy and I had raspberry, one of their better flavors. I think if I lived back home, I would buy pints instead of buying ice cream. The weekend turned to shite afterwards, I was sore, unable to walk so I hobbled around my parents house. Had to cancel the evening's plans to the bars, cried hysterically over stupid guilt, and ended up watching, some movie with Sean Connery and a very, very young Christian slater about a 16th century monk that has to solve the murders of brothers in the abbey caused by handing a manuscript. It's cheesy but it's a medieval movie, I might try to see if its available on DVD. Sunday, we saw one of the two military transport planes that flew into the airport on Saturday and shook the house for five minutes, if I didn't know it was a plane, I woudl have guessed that it was an earthquake. Twice that happened. We went to see Shrek 2 which was funny, and full of references like the first one. Thankfully, we missed el presidente flying in on the plane - not the helicopter - surprisingly into the rinky-dink airport. But if the military transport planes could land, then the plane would have no problem. That was the insane weekend, I'm looking forward to memorial day and not doing a damn thing. 08:51 AM
